News → 2011-9-04 THE WORKERS IN THE MIDDLE

I really like the work I do. One of the most wonderful things about it is the chance to develop relationships with our clients. I love meeting new people and helping make their business lives a little easier — and I’ve seen first hand that, like a family or a ship’s crew, it takes all kinds to make an office team!

Thomas J. DeLong over at the Harvard Business Review online has a great column about a particular type of worker that makes up the majority of business employees today, but which is woefully underserved by management. He calls this worker “the Stalwart.”

According to DeLong, the Stalwart is s solid, stoic performer, whose chin-up-shoulder-down working style is what keeps a company running, despite low-perfoming Sloths and attention-grabbing Stars. But, he writes, this exact kind of contribution to the company — getting things done without making demands on the time of higher-ups — is what prevents Stalwarts from getting recognition and support.

Are there Stalwarts among your team? Are you one yourself? Have a look at this interesting article (with handy-dandy chart!) to learn more about this unique business profile. I have a feeling I myself will find it handy...
